What Is a TAN?

A Tax Deduction and Collection Account Number (TAN) is a unique 10‑character alphanumeric code issued by the Income‑tax Department. It must appear on all documents related to Tax Deducted at Source (TDS) and Tax Collected at Source (TCS): returns, challans, certificates, and correspondence.

Who Must Obtain TAN?

  • All Deductors: Any person or entity (companies, firms, non‑profits) making payments on which TDS/TCS is required.
  • Branch Offices: Each branch that deducts or collects tax must hold its own TAN.
  • Contractors & Consultants: Entities paying contract or professional fees above the threshold.
  • Exemptions: Salaried individuals with only payroll income do not need a TAN.

TAN Number Structure

N A N N | | | | | | | +— Alphanumeric check digit | | +—— System‑generated number | +——— System‑generated number +———— First three letters of jurisdiction

  • 1–3: Jurisdiction code (IT circle)
  • 4: First letter of the deductor’s name
  • 5–9: System‑assigned digits
  • 10: Check character

Exemptions & Penalties

  • Not Required: Payments below prescribed thresholds; transactions explicitly exempt under Rule 37BB (e.g., certain imports, embassy expenses).
  • Penalties: ₹10,000 for failure to quote TAN in TDS/TCS returns, challans, or certificates; additional penalties for non‑filing.
